In 1987, the Bolton Volunteer Ambulance Service faced a crisis hidden in plain sight: daytime coverage. As working adults left for jobs outside town each morning, emergency response times climbed. The community needed a solution that didn't depend on traditional volunteers.
The answer was the students at Nashoba Regional High School. By training high school sophomores and juniors as certified EMTs, Bolton could maintain reliable daytime coverage, and in doing so, created one of the most distinctive and impactful youth programs in Massachusetts.
Nearly four decades later, the program continues to serve the towns of Bolton, Lancaster, and Stow through the Nashoba Regional School District, producing over 600 certified EMTs who have gone on to careers in medicine, public safety, and community leadership.
The Cadet EMT program has changed significantly since 1987. What began as a direct response to a daytime staffing shortage has grown into a rigorous medical education program that reflects the realities of modern emergency services.

Today, Bolton and the surrounding towns have full-time professional staff covering emergency calls. The Cadet program has evolved accordingly. Cadets no longer fill a staffing void, they are students gaining supervised clinical experience under the direction of licensed professionals. The emphasis is on education, mentorship, and preparation for careers in medicine and public safety.
Cadets work alongside Bolton Fire-EMS professionals in a structured learning environment. Their role is defined by their training level and the oversight of licensed personnel at all times.
Cadet participation in emergency calls is governed by Massachusetts Office of Emergency Medical Services regulations and requires specific certifications, age requirements, and supervisor approval. Cadets do not respond independently. All field experience occurs under the direct supervision of licensed EMS professionals and within the boundaries established by state waiver requirements.
